Back in 1974, a gallon of gas was only .55 cents, the average home cost $10,990 and Jimmy Fallon was just born.
It was also the year that 18 year old Lou Giroud decided to officially launch “Lou’s Lawn Care”, the bedrock for what would become Giroud Tree & Lawn!
In the Summer of 1965, Lou was just 10 years old when he started started cutting lawns for 3 of his neighbors. His entrepreneurial spark was ignited and, in those early years, he learned the fundamentals of good customer service.
In March, 1974, Lou founded “Lou’s Lawn Care.” He worked out of his parent’s garage and this one-man operation initially just served customers in his Huntingdon Valley neighborhood.
“From the beginning, the Company’s mission has been to make customers love doing business with us,” says Lou Giroud, Founder and President. “It’s a simple idea that guides how we handle everything, from a customer’s first call until after the job is done.”
By 1979, Giroud Tree and Lawn began to focus on full service Tree Care. A few short years later, the Plant Health Care division was established to prevent and treat insect and disease problems. In 2009, Giroud Tree and Lawn returned to its original Lawn Care roots and launched lawn services with a focus on custom lawn treatments and lawn repair services.
In a little over 40 years, Giroud Tree and Lawn has grown from a single employee serving customers using a 1956 Dodge pick-up to 38 employees, 22 trucks and a variety of specialty equipment, all housed at its headquarters in Huntingdon Valley PA!
Family Owned and Operated
Giroud is very much a family business. Lou’s brother-in-law, Drew Slousky, joined the company in 1977. In 1996, he became the company’s first ISA Certified Arborist. Now Drew is a Vice President who continues to serve his customers directly as an arborist.
From a very young age, Lou’s twin sons, Jeff and Matt, have been immersed in the Giroud culture. Lou and his wife, Cindy, gave the boys opportunities to explore the world of business and customer service on their own, all while instilling the fundamental values of the Giroud Tree and Lawn model. It’s no wonder that both Matt and Jeff decided to come back to the family company after finishing college. Matt works with the Field Team as the Director of Field Operations while Jeff manages in-house staff as the company’s Director of Business Operations.
Even Cindy has played a vital role in the company since 1995 now serving as the Vice President of Marketing, utilizing over 35 years of marketing and customer service experience.
Giroud has always made it a priority to give back to the community. The team comes together once a year for a night of service at Cradles to Crayons, an organization that provides new and nearly new items to kids in need. They also hold an annual food drive for Philabundance, donating over 1,000 pounds in the past several years.
In 1997, the company launched Giroud Treework for Charity to help local non-profit organizations preserve their irreplaceable trees. Over the years, Giroud has provided free tree service, totaling over $80,000, to numerous area organizations including: Abington Memorial Hospital, Hatboro YMCA, Churchville Nature Center, Libertae, Inc., Moland House, Bucks County Housing Group, Historic Langhorne Association, Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust, Pegasus Riding Academy and Jenkintown and Abington Libraries.
“You’ll Love Doing Business with Giroud… Guaranteed!”
As the only tree and lawn company to win the Angie’s List “Super Service Award” every year since the award began in 2005, clearly Lou’s original idea of making customers love doing business with Giroud is working!
