Why Emerald Ash Borer is an Insect You Can’t Afford to Ignore
For the last 17 years, the U.S. has been battling the Emerald Ash Borer. These shiny green beetles have decimated millions of Ash Trees across the country! If you’re a homeowner with an Ash Tree on your property, you need to have your tree inspected now or you may pay a hefty price later! Read on to learn why the Emerald Ash Borer is an insect you can’t afford to ignore!
How Emerald Ash Borer Kill Ash Trees Quickly
If you’re a homeowner with an Ash Tree on your property, you need to know that it’s not a matter of if your tree will become infested, it’s a matter of when! To call these insects destructive is an understatement. Emerald Ash Borer are downright catastrophic for Ash Trees, and homeowners are paying the price to clean up the damage left in their wake!
Adult Emerald Ash Borer insects lay their eggs under the bark. As the larvae emerge, they start chewing their way through the wood of the tree. Imagine the veins of your body with blood flowing freely through them. In much the same way, the veins in the grains of the tree allow water to flow throughout the trunk and out to the branches. When the larvae chew through the wood, they cut off water circulation. Additionally, the adult beetles create thousands of exit wounds as they leave the tree, further causing damage that dries out the tree. Once an Ash Tree is infested with Emerald Ash Borer, it will die within just 2-3 years!
This insect has killed Ash Trees all throughout America at an alarming rate. If you have an unprotected Ash Tree on your property, this insect will inevitably attack it. When your tree becomes infested, it will quickly become a safety hazard and create costly problems for you.
Dead Ash Trees Cause Property Damage
As more time passes and the tree dries out, large, heavy branches can break off or the entire trunk can crack and fall, causing expensive property damage. Giroud Arborists have seen a lot of damage done to houses, fences, playsets, garages and neighbors’ properties. Plus, it doesn’t take high winds to knock down these trees because they dry out so quickly!
Removal is More Costly the Longer You Wait
A dead Ash Tree is not a simple tree removal. Once an Ash tree dies, it needs to be removed ASAP. The brittle tree is so dry that it can break apart in unexpected ways, causing significant and expensive damage. Additionally, tree climbers cannot safely climb Ash Trees that have dried out for too long. The job will become much more expensive if special equipment, such as a crane, needs to be brought in to remove the tree.
Check out this video of the Giroud Crew removing 8 dead Ash Trees in Wrightstown, PA. Tree Climber, Dan Rombold had to be lifted by crane to the tops of these dangerously brittle trees in order to remove them safely. You can even see dry branches cracking off around him and falling to the ground below!
Steps to Take if You Have an Ash Tree
By the time you notice that your Ash tree doesn’t look healthy, Emerald Ash Borers have already done significant internal damage. The only way to know the best course of action for your tree is to schedule an inspection with your ISA Certified Giroud Arborst NOW. He will evaluate the tree and look for the tell-tale signs of Emerald Ash Borer infestation, including:
D shaped exit wounds from the adult borers leaving the tree after feeding
Woodpecker damage- these birds feed on Emerald Ash Borer Larvae
Crown die-back- more than half the tree’s crown must still be alive and in full leaf in order for it to be able to absorb the treatment
If your Ash Tree is still healthy, your Giroud Arborist will recommend Tree-age trunk injections. Tree-age is the only treatment that fully protects Ash Trees from Emerald Ash Borers. The experts at Giroud Tree and Lawn know that Tree-age provides the best control against Emerald Ash Borer and it lasts for two years.
If it is too late for your Ash Tree to be saved, he will recommend removal ASAP. When it comes to a dry, brittle, dead Ash Tree, it doesn’t take much for it to cause damage!
