Female Mosquito Preparing to Bite

Giroud makes your yard a "No Itch Zone" by:

  1. Risk Assessment:Your Giroud Arborist will do a comprehensive inspection of your property to identify mosquito hot spots and develop a customized Mosquito Control Program.
  2. Best Timing for Treatment: Mosquito populations skyrocket as the weather gets warmer. Giroud recommends treatments every 3 weeks especially during the warmest months from late Spring through early Fall. Additional treatments may be required for properties with unusually high mosquito populations.
  3. Comprehensive Mosquito Control: To be successful, mosquitoes must be controlled where they hide which is typically any dark, moist environment or dense vegetation. Our special 100% Organic formula gets the job done with essential oils including peppermint and cedar oils which are natural repellents. Every time Giroud visits your property for a treatment, your Giroud Technician will walk your entire property to identify and treat all of the mosquito hot spots. Giroud’s 100% Organic program uses a two step approach:
    • Perimeter sprays: Mosquitoes do not use lawns as resting places. Instead, they look for sheltered areas that are out of direct sunlight. Your Giroud Technician will apply treatment along the edges of your property to create a mosquito barrier.
    • Hot Spots: Mosquitoes must be controlled where they congregate. Of course the most important control points are in the outdoor spaces where you live, eat and play. Each application will cover these Hot Spots including: foliage, vegetation areas, mulch beds, buildings, porches, eaves, decks and patios.
    1. Remove or Empty Objects that Collect Water: Mosquitoes need water for two stages of their life cycle. Our inspection will identify areas where water collects that must be removed, emptied frequently or treated. Recommendations may include: removing water in rain gutters, old tires, buckets, plastic covers, or any other container; emptying and changing the water in bird baths, fountains, wading pools, rain barrels and potted plant trays at least once a week; draining temporary pools of water or fill with dirt.
    2. Prune or Remove Overgrown Vegetation: Mosquitoes are shade lovers. The Giroud Team can eliminate shady habitats in two ways. First, cleaning up and/or clearing overgrown areas. Second, pruning tree branches and shrubs around the lawn edge to let in more sunlight.

Added Bonus!  Giroud's 100% Organic treatments give you much more than mosquito protection. Our formula also protects your family and pets from dangerous Ticks and Nuisance Pests.

  1. Tick Control. Mosquitoes and ticks are attracted to many of the same dark, moist environments. Like mosquitoes, ticks are a dangerous pest and known for spreading many diseases including Lyme Disease and the Powassan Virus. You can get more facts about Lyme Disease and tick protection at Penn State's Lyme Disease website.
  2. Nuisance Pests: Our 100 % Organic treatment formula is made from essential oils, which are natural repellents for a variety of annoying pests like fleas, gnats, centipedes and ants.

Having a Party? Don't let hungry mosquitoes attack your guests! From a backyard cookout to a family reunion, graduation or wedding, we can help! For best control, we recommend two treatments. The first is applied about two weeks before your event. The second is done about 2-3 days ahead.

Natural Remedies for Bug Bites: Even if you've done all the right things from yard protection to personal repellents, you may still get bitten by mosquitoes or ticks.    Here are natural remedies from Women's Health magazine that can help treat the bite and reduce the itch.

  • Essential Oils: Tea Tree Oil (also anti bacterial), Lavender and Coconut Oil can alleviate itching.
  • Honey: Is an anti-inflammatory
  • Lemon or Lime Juice:  Provides itch relief and is anti-bacterial.  If used, stay of the sun to prevent a burn.
  • Toothpaste: Provides a cooling sensation and relieves the urge to itch.
  • Vinegar: Use white or apple cider vinegar on a cotton ball or add to a bath.

It’s good to know that you can strike-out dangerous and annoying pests with this powerful 100% Organic treatment!  Concerned about mosquitoes, ticks and nuisance pests? Contact Giroud Tree and Lawn! Your Giroud ISA Certified Arborist will be happy to do a free evaluation.

Tick Control

Tick Control is a must to protect people and pets from these dangerous, blood sucking pests.  Burrowing under the skin, Ticks can cause serious harm.  Far worse than the bad rash and the pain of removing the tick, these nasty pests spread Lyme Disease, the deadly Powassan Virus and other serious illnesses.

What Are the Best Ways to Control Ticks in Your Yard?

Giroud’s Tick Control program targets ticks where they live. Deer Ticks like the shade and seek protection from the sun in ground level vegetation. Favorite hiding spots include high grasses, underbrush, shrubs and wooded areas. Here’s what we do to control this dangerous pest:

  1. Tick Risk Evaluation: Your Giroud Arborist will complete a risk assessment of Tick Control Protects from Lyme Disease and Powassan Virusyour property to identify tick danger zones and develop a customized tick control program.
  2. Perimeter Clean-up: Ticks are shade lovers and can’t survive in the sun. The Giroud Team can eliminate shady tick habitats in two ways. First, cleaning up and/or clearing overgrown areas. Second, pruning tree branches and shrubs around the lawn edge to let in more sunlight.
  3. Deer Repellent: Deer are the primary carrier of ticks to your property. Our Deer Repellant service is safe, water-resistant and will deter deer from feeding on your valuable plants!
  4. 100% Organic Tick Control Treatments: Giroud’s specially licensed applicators will treat around the perimeter of your property and other high-risk areas. Our 100% organic treatment is made from essential oils including Peppermint and Cedar oils which are a natural tick repellent.
  5. Plant Selection: We will identify plants that are attracting deer to your yard and suggest alternative plants.

Why Is Tick Control Needed?

Our suburbs are a hot spot for Lyme Disease cases according to the Center for Disease Control. As tick populations explode, the spread of tick borne diseases has increased exponentially.   Tick Removal

Now, there's a new threat, the Powassan Virus which is spread by infected ticks in as little as 15 minutes of the tick burrowing in the skin.  By contrast, it takes 24 hours for a tick to infect a person or pet with Lyme Disease.

Check daily for ticks and remove as soon as possible.  Don't try folklore remedies here!  Follow the CDC Tick Removal Directions which include warnings against using things like vaseline and nail polish.

In addition to controlling ticks, Giroud’s treatment formula also provides excellent mosquito control. Ticks and Mosquitoes are attracted to many of the same dark, moist environments. Like ticks, mosquitoes are a dangerous pest and known for spreading many diseases including the Zika and West Nile Viruses. It’s good to know that you can strike out dangerous pests with a powerful 100% organic treatment!

Emerald Ash Borer and Treatment

Emerald Ash Borers Are Killing Ash Trees across the Philadelphia Region

Emerald Ash Borers are spreading rapidly. This 100% fatal pest is forcing homeowners to choose between treatment or tree removal. If you have Ash trees you love, you need to take action now.

Contact Giroud Tree and Lawn Today!

Unfortunately, anyone with an Ash tree faces a difficult decision. Protect the Ash tree from Emerald Ash Borer with treatment or let it die and remove it. Without treatment, Ash Trees with Emerald Ash Borer die within 1-3 years. By the time you see visible decline, Emerald Ash Borer has already done significant internal damage to the tree. That’s why, it’s critical to treat now before damage is beyond repair. Check out our Emerald Ash Borer Fact Sheet for more information.

Here's How to Protect Your Ash Trees from Emerald Ash Borer:

  1. Early detection: Have your Giroud ISA Certified Arborist evaluate your property for Ash trees and recommend the best action.Healthy Ash trees protected with trunk injections growing next to untreated Ash killed by Emerald Ash Borer. Photo credit: Daniel Herms, The Ohio State University.
  2. Treat high value Ash trees with a systemic trunk injection every two years.  In performance tests, Michigan State researchers found that systemic trunk injections of TREE-age® with Emamectin Benzoate (Em Ben) applied every two years, achieved the best results.

  3. Other Emerald Ash Borer Treatment Options: The chart below shows the number of Emerald Ash Borer found two years after different treatment options were performed.

Emerald Ash Borer Treatment Research Results

While systemic trunk injection is without a doubt the best treatment to combat Emerald Ash Borers, there are other options:

    1. Soil Injection/Soil Drench with Imidacloprid: EAB control has been inconsistent. Experience and research indicate that this treatment is most effective on smaller trees. The treatment must be applied annually in mid-late Spring or mid-Fall.
    2. Basal Trunk Sprays with Dinotefuran: Control was variable in research trials. The treatment reduced EAB larval density by approximately 30 percent to 60 percent compared to heavily infested untreated trees. The treatment is effective for one year.
    3. Topical Cover Sprays: Provides good control, especially when the insecticides were applied in late May and again in early July when the adult Borer are feeding on the leaves.

Warning: Dead Ash Trees Are Not Safe!

Emerald Ash Borers Are Fast Killers:

Ash trees infested with Emerald Ash Borers die within 1-3 years. Ash Tree Killed by Emerald Ash Borer is not safe and must be removed. If more than ½ of the tree's crown is dead, the Ash cannot be saved.  Unfortunately, a dead Ash tree quickly becomes a safety hazard.

Check out our Dangers of Dead Ash Tree Fact Sheet for more information.  Tree removal will be necessary, especially if the dead Ash is located near your home, driveway or play area.  Pictured: Emerald Ash Borer killed this untreated Ash Tree in Blue Bell, PA

Why Are Dead Ash Trees Unsafe?

Two realities make Ash Trees killed by Emerald Ash Borers a safety hazard:

  1. Moisture Loss: Emerald Ash Borers cut off the flow of water and nutrients through the tree.  Additionally, the fatal pest creates thousands of exit wounds.  Both conspire to dry out the tree and make it brittle.
  2. Weak Structure: The same straight, tight grain that makes Ash great for baseball bats and splitting firewood is also why its limbs and leaders easily split apart.   The result is a dry, brittle tree that is at high risk for breaking apart.

Removal Must Be Done ASAP:

A dead Ash tree is not a simple tree removal.  The brittle tree is so dry that it can break apart in unexpected ways and cause significant damage.  The first step is to have the tree evaluated.

Your Giroud ISA Certified Arborist will evaluate the tree’s condition.  He will
determine if a tree climber can safely work in the tree or if a crane and/or bucket truck is required.  The longer the dead tree is left in the ground, the drier and more dangerous it becomes; making tree removal even more complicated and expensive.

Take Action:

Don’t wait. Here are 4 Steps to protect healthy trees from Emerald Ash Borer and prevent damage from dead Ash trees:

  1. Inspection: Have your Giroud Arborist evaluate the tree and recommend the best action.
  2. Tree Removal: If the Ash tree is dead or has become unsafe, prompt removal is required.
  3. Treatment: If the Ash tree is still healthy enough to absorb treatment, a systemic trunk injection of Tree-age® every two years protects Ash from Emerald Ash Borers.
  4. Regular Pruning: In combination with treatment, remove deadwood and prune to promote healthy growth.
